The Road Less Traveled: A Short Visit to Tinago Falls

By kweneeeta - 8:01 PM

During our trip to Sambawan, the group decided that we will take a detour and visit Tinago Falls in Caibiran before going home. And so, we left Sambawan Island at 7:30am.

From Naval, it will take another 30-45 minutes to reach Tinago Falls. After the long, winding, and steep roadtrip, we reached Tinago Falls. I was expecting a big tarpaulin or sign board on the crossroad leading to the falls--there was none. There was, however, a DPWH sign showing the way to the falls. If you brought a car, no worries. A parking space is available for use.

Entrance to the Falls
Parking spaces are available too. How convenient.
The eco-park is not free at all. But, it will not cost much. Entrance fee is only 15 pesos--that's it. A covered area is provided where visitors can have their meals. Eating and drinking in or near the waters is not allowed. They also have a separate toilets, shower rooms, and changing rooms for men and women. Water is free but is not safe for drinking--for toilet use or showering only.

Comfort rooms. Men to the left. Women to the right.

The eco-park is not well-maintained, I can say. The comfort rooms need renovations. The whole park needs a little landscaping. The park needs more staff to assist and secure the swimmers.

But, do not be discouraged. Amidst all that, you will still enjoy the swim. Tinago Falls is very charming. The water was clean and cold. You will never get enough of it.

It's nicer up close
After having our early lunch, we geared up, secured our belongings, and started to move towards the falls. That's right. From the eating area, you will still need to walk through a concrete pathway to reach the falls. Be careful and mind your steps. There are neither shouldering nor handrails.

Wow! Truly a hidden (tinago) gem

The most memorable thing we did in Tinago Falls was jumping off a rock/cliff. My knees were shaking but I really wanted to do it. And so I calmed my heart and took the leap. D*mn was it crazy good!

Cliff jumping. Not for the faint-hearted....and non-swimmer.

How to get there?
Follow the same instructions from my Sambawan Island post. From Naval town proper, take a  jeep/bus headed to Caibiran. Alight at Tinago Falls intersection. Trek for about 15-30 minutes. Just follow the concrete path towards the falls--don't stray--and you'll arrive at Tinago Falls safely.

Options, option, options:
  • Rent a car from Tacloban City that will take you directly from the airport to Tinago Falls at Caibiran. You may contact Haven's rent-a-car services or visit them at their airport booth. They are the most trusted tourist transport service in the region. Mention this blog if you book with them. Who knows? I MIGHT even get you a discount.
  • From Tacloban, take a van/bus to Caibiran. Hire a single motorcycle to Tinago Falls.
  • From Naval, hire a single motorcycle or tricycle to take you to Tinago Falls.
